While the summer progresses, so does our garden. It’s now late July and we’ve been harvesting a few different items from our wonderful garden. Things have really taken off in the last week, and soon we will, most likely, be overwhelmed with fresh produce. Not that anyone will be complaining around here! This is our favorite time of year at May Farms.

We harvested our first potatoes of the season this week, and have begun picking squash and lettuce as well. We should be ready to open our full-scale farmstand in the next couple of weeks at this rate. Naturally, we will keep you posted as to when that will happen.

Have you ever had fresh potatoes, right out of the ground? If you haven’t ever had any potatoes that you didn’t buy at the grocery store, you simply do not know what you’re missing. Fresh, farm raised potatoes that haven’t been sitting in a warehouse somewhere are tender, creamy and so full of flavor- they are way beyond your ordinary potato! They even cook much faster than their store bought cousins. This year, the only way you will get any of those fresh May Farms potatoes, though, is by coming in for a meal. They are reserved for our signature dishes here when you come to the farm on the weekends. We might be selfish this way, hoarding them all for ourselves- but we guarantee you will think that you’d died and gone to heaven when you taste what our chef can do with these tasty morsels! So it’s really not selfish at all, we want you, our guest, to get the most extraordinary experience and tastes possible at your next visit to the farm.

Come enjoy a May Farms signature lunch or dinner experience- it’s like nowhere else on the planet! Great food, great fun and impeccable world-class service. That’s the May Farms difference!

Produce and progress!

Garden progress continues as we are now beginning to pick lettuce and squash! The watermelon and cantaloupe, as well as the pumpkins have all developed good sized fruit on them, which can only mean that soon we will be enjoying the sweet, glorious goodness of the watermelon and cantaloupe and making funny faces with those pumpkins! We will continue to keep you updated on the garden and farmstand details.

We are nearing completion of our gift shop, which will be opening very soon! Keep an eye out for that announcement, too! So many new and exciting changes are going on around the farm, intended to make your visit the best it can be! We hope to see you this summer or during our annual harvest festival. Whether it is your first visit, or your 100th, we strive to make you feel at home here at May Farms. We pride ourselves on making every event special for you, our guest, and we want to ensure that your time with us is enjoyable!

Wheat harvest is well underway and things are looking pretty good! The countryside is filled with large equipment and Byers is a hub of activity. Summer is in full swing, indeed. I love this time of year, watching the crops that were planted in spring filling the fields with row after row of rich green plants, while knowing that the wheat planted in the winter is being harvested at this moment. I can nearly smell the bread baking from here! There are so many good things that come from this time of year. Right now we've got spinach, radishes, swiss chard and some okra (more to come very soon) for sale.

The weather has been cooperative lately, which is a nice change from June when it was too cold or wet to do much planting. We're a little behind with the garden for that reason, but it's catching up fast! Our new underground water system helps immensely, as we can control how much water everything gets. It makes caring for that big garden of ours pretty simple, we can water with the simple push of a button. We typically have had to flood irrigate the pumpkins and corn maze, but out new water system makes that practice obsolete. Despite heavy rains earlier this month, we haven't had much rain this last week, which means we can get back out in the fields for weeding and other daily tasks. We've been lucky to not have hail or terribly damaging winds this season, either. We're hoping this trend continues!

Great news! We are adding a gift shop to the farm, and it is really taking shape, we will have to post some pictures when it's done. There are going to be some really great items in there, and we will keep you posted with Grand Opening details. There's lots of other changes going on around here, too. This is such an exciting time around here! More details to follow soon, stay tuned!

How does your garden grow?

The garden continues to make progress, growing and changing nearly every day. Weeds are an ongoing challenge in any garden, but a garden that is around 6 acres is a day to day battle for control! We are getting a grip on them now that the fields have dried up after a very wet couple of weeks. It's all hands on deck right now for weed control and the many other jobs that a farm requires, but we are loving every minute of it. Seeing the progress when it comes to the garden makes all that hard work worth it!

Next time you're looking for something fun to do, visit our website at www.mayfarms.com to see our calendar of events! Hope to see you soon... down on the farm.

Wheat Harvest has begun!

Wheat harvest has finally begun in our area, albeit two weeks later than normal. Heavy rains over the last couple of weeks have kept equipment out of the fields due to mud. The garden plants are loving this natural water source, and have accelerated their growing rates, too. It's always such an exciting time when the wheat harvest begins around here, because we realize that our garden will be soon following suit with a bountiful harvest of it's own.
The cantaloupe and watermelon have new fist sized fruit on them, and are vining like crazy! Tiny baby yellow and zucchini squash are beginning to make an appearance as well. Even though the okra plants are still pretty tiny, they have okra pods on them as we speak, although we have had to harvest a few of these in order to let the plants grow some more (darn, that just breaks my heart!) Fried okra, now that's some seriously good food.
Speaking of good food....if you're looking for something to do this weekend, join us at May Farms for the Beer, Brat and Sweet Corn Festival from noon to 6pm on Saturday, July 23rd. Be prepared to eat hearty and have a great time! You can take a firsthand look at the lavender and the vegetable garden, too! The more the merrier! Hope to see you there!
